São Paulo, April 1, 2004 (Agência Brasil) - University and secondary school students held a demonstration today in São Paulo, as part of the Brazilian Students' Time of Struggle, organized by the National Students' Union (UNE) and the Brazilian Secondary Students' Union (UBES), and launched yesterday (31) in Belo Horizonte.

During the demonstration the students called for changes in economic policy and a reform in institutions of higher education, so that they can spur national development.

According to UNE president, Gustavo Petta, the students believe that for their demands to be met, economic policy must be altered. The students want university reform to guarantee resources for the maintenance and expansion of openings in public universities.
