Brasília, June 12, 2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - The Law on Bioterrorism, which should take effect in the United States on December 4, is already beginning to mobilize the members of the Chamber of Foreign Trade (Camex) - a group formed by the Ministries of Finance, Development, Planning, Foreign Relations, Agriculture, and the Presidential Advisory Staff. Between now and the end of the year, the regulatory organ should define a series of strategies to guarantee that Brazilian products, especially those connected to agrobusiness, continue to be exported to the United States without any trade barrier.

According to the new American law - the purpose of which is to fight terrorism conveyed via trade - dozens of norms will be imposed on any country that wishes to sell its products to American consumers. Among the requirements are special labels and assessment offices, the costs of which should be borne by the exporters themselves. "Over the next few months, we want to hold discussions, including discussions with the customs houses, on how to deal with these rules," said the Camex executive secretary, Mário Muganaini. (DAS)
