Brasília, 9/22/2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - A study by the Brazilian Farm Research Corporation (Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária) (Embrapa) and the Statistical Bureau (Instituto Brasileira de Geografia e Estatística) (IBGE) shows that while there has been a significant rise in farm production since 1975, it has occurred without the need for deforestation. The study shows that an area of 50 million hectares of savannah and rainforest was actually spared. The IBGE/Embrapa report also shows that Brazil still has a total of 90 million hectares of unused arable land which can eventually produce crops without the need to cut down a single tree in the Amazon.
