Unicef praises advances in eradication of child labor in Brazil

Rio, 7/12/2004 (Agência Brasil) - Unicef project coordinator, Salvador Soler, says that the Brazilian government initiative, known as the Child Labor Eradication Program (PETI), has shown itself to be efficient in getting children out of the job market and back to school. Soler called PETI "very positive," but added much remains to be done.

"There have been some very good results. But there are still around 3 million children, between the ages of 5 and 15, who work. That is a lot of children. The challenge is to find ways to expand the program, reduce the number of working children to zero. They should be studying and having fun, not working," said Soler.
