Brazil wants to host 2014 World Cup and Olympics

Brasília, May 19, 2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - The 2007 Pan-American Games, the 2012 Olympics, and the 2014 World Cup. The Brazilian project of hosting the world's three major sporting events and revolutionizing the national sports industry over the next 15 years has become a government objective.

In an interview, Saturday, with Radiobrás, the Minister of Sports, Agnelo Queiroz, affirmed that the Administration will use all of its structure and diplomacy to attain these goals.

After guaranteeing that the Pan-American Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro, the next goal is to bring the Olympic Games to Brazil. According to the Minister, hosting the first Olympics held in South America would represent an historical landmark for the country. "We want to win this dispute," he affirmed. The choice of the host country for the 2012 Olympics will be made in 2005.

On the domestic front, Queiroz emphasized that the number one priority will be the implementation of the law to modernize soccer and the fan's statute. "Soccer is a big ambassador of Brazil abroad. It is a legacy that needs to be modernized and appreciated." he explained. (DAS)
