Brasília, April 10, 2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - A motion calling for retribution for the deaths, yesterday, in Baghdad, of eleven journalists who were covering the war between the United States and Iraq, was presented in plenary session by the Human Rights Commission (CDH) of the Chamber of Deputies. The Commission considers that the assassinations should be regarded as war crimes, and those responsible should be tried in the International Criminal Court. In the motion, the CDH alerts against the precedent set by the United States, which can weaken the authority of the UN. The motion also emphasizes that the death of the journalists places at risk "the utopia of the construction and consolidation of a democratic, free-thinking society." (DAS)
