Lula's politics follow Gandhi's definition, Boff affirms

Porto Alegre, January 23, 2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - Theologian Leonardo Boff said yesterday (22), on the final day of the World Educational Forum, that the politics of Lula's administration should inspire parties and groups from other countries to seek new ways to exercise power. Boff classified Lula's politics as just and sustainable, and he said that they are ethical and humanistic, consistent with Gandhi's definition of what politics should be.

According to Boff, Gandhi preached that a just politics is one conducted with care for the people, with a "loving gesture" towards public things. "For this reason, Lula's first political gesture was the Zero Hunger Program. That is, a program that does not serve only the interests of certain groups, but the interests of all. This is the concrete foundation for political hope," said Boff. (DAS)
