Brasília, 11 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - Brazilian researchers at the National Space Research Institute (INPE), in São José dos Campos (São Paulo), have begun the first structural testing of the mini Franco-Brazilian scientific satellite (known as MFB), which is scheduled to go into orbit in 2004 carrying 5 Brazilian experiments and 4 French ones. The MFB is part of a bilateral agreement and is coordinated by the Brazilian Space Agency. Each country is footing 50% of the costs, estimated at US$11 million.

Brazil is building the MFB structural framework and temperature controls, and the engineering systems and energy supply, which will use solar panels and batteries. The French are taking care of the altitude control system, telemeters and telecommands, and the onboard computer. When the satellite is in orbit, it will be controlled by Brazilian specialists. (AB)
