Brasilia, 26 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - Japan will be the next market to import Brazilian mangos. The Agriculture ministry's secretary of Agricultural Research, Luis Carlos de Oliveira, met yesterday with Japanese technicians to settle the final details for the commerce of the fruit between the two countries.

"Japan was demanding that we eliminate fruit fly larvae so that our product could enter their country," Oliveira explained, adding that universities of São Paulo and Brasilia created a new technique for the treatment of larvae that pleased the Japanese technicians.

"They came to confirm the effectiveness of the treatment and were satisfied with the results and impressed with the work underway and with mango production," the secretary explained. "It's another victory for Brazil. We are knocking down one more phytosanitary control barrier, which means we are apt, from the stand point of quality, passing the strictest criteria of the world".

After the verification of the efficacy of the treatment, a protocol between the two nations will be signed and Brazil should begin to export mangos to Japan in the next 3 months. (MW)
