Cardoso criticizes trade protectionism in Warsaw

Warsaw, 26 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - President Fernando Henrique Cardoso said Monday - when speaking at the Warsaw School of Economics - that he has emphasized, in the last few years, the problems that keep globalization from fulfilling its promises, stressing the asymmetries of trade and the instability of the international financial structure.

"Trade protectionism is the greatest obstacle to cooperation among nations today. Tariff and non-tariff barriers of the richer nations keep developing nations from reaping the benefits of their comparative advantages. High sums of money are spent by some of the richer nations to subsidize their agriculture, both in the domestic market, as well as exports," Cardoso declared.

Cardoso also said that poverty and inequality in the world economy are a painful demonstration of both the need for solidarity and for values that go beyond the rationale of one's own interests. "Think of sub-Saharan Africa as an example," he said. (MW)
