Rio de Janeiro – Compared with employment levels in February, there was a drop of 0.4% in jobs in the industrial sector in March, and 1.2% compared to March 2011. This is the sixth consecutive month that employment in manufacturing has fallen. The cumulative decrease in sector jobs for the year, compared to the same period in 2011, is now 0.8%.
The current cycle of job losses in industry began in February 2011 and the cumulative total loss since then is now 3.9%.
São Paulo, the country’s industrial center, was the worse region according to a regular government statistical bureau survey (“IBGE Pesquisa Industrial Mensal de Emprego e Salário”) that found that employment was down in 14 out of 18 segments in the state. Production of goods made of metal were down the most, 14.3%, followed by electro-electronic and communications devices and equipment, down 8.3%.
