Brasília – Participating countries of the Summit of South American-Arab Countries emphasized the importance of supporting a candidate of a developing nation for the post of director-general of the World Trade Organization (WTO), "as a way of democratizing and expanding its participation on the conduction of the main organisms of the multilateral trade system."
The position of WTO’s Director-General is being disputed by Uruguayan candidate, Carlos Pérez Del Castillo, and by the ex-Commissioner of the European Union, Pascal Lamy.
The Summit’s final document, called the Brasilia Declaration, reiterates support for the strengthening of the WTO and for the "successful" conclusion of negotiations regarding the Doha Development Agenda, benefiting developing nations, also in sectors where they are more competitive.
