Rio, February 25, 2004 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - The State Forest Institute Foundation (IEF/RJ) has been promoting Operation Carnaval since February 19, in four of its conservation units, with the participation of 60 members of its technical staff. So far, 130 visitors have been registered in the Three Peaks State Park, which encompasses the municipalities of Cachoeiras de Macacu, Nova Friburgo, Teresópolis, Silva Jardim, and Guapimirim.
The operation involves inspection and environmental education to avoid damage to the biodiversity, such as the removal of vegetation to erect tents and the overloading of trails. The register makes it possible to control visitors' arrival and departure and the capacity of the trails. Operation Carnaval continues through Ash Wednesday. (DAS)
