Rio, 12/4/2002 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - The UN Population Fund and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) have released a joint report on Brazil which shows that 1/3 of the population, 54 million people, are poor. Out of that total, 49 million survive on less than half a minimum wage (R$200 per month) (US$78). The remaining 5 million have no visible income. The report also shows significant regional differences. In the Northeast, 51% of the population live on less than a half a minimum wage (R$100) per month, while in the Southeast only 18% of the population is in that situation. (AB)
