Lula underscores need to end economic and social inequalities in Latin America

Santiago, December 3, 2002 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed a declaration, together with Chilean president Ricardo Lagos, at La Moneda Palace, highlighting the need to change the profile of economic and social inequalities in Brazil and on the continent. "The extreme poverty that makes tens of millions of men and women virtual outcasts cannot be tolerated," Lula affirms in the declaration. He says that no political democracy can withstand such dramatic social differences. In the speech, Lula reaffirms the commitment he assumed to preserve economic stability and honor contracts. (DAS)
