NEW IN ENGLISH – New board of directors takes office in Chamber of Deputies

Brasília – Brazil’s 54th legislative session began yesterday with elections of presiding officers in the Chamber of Deputies (most of the posts are negotiated beforehand and divided up among the political parties). Besides the president, Marco Maia (PT-RS), the following members of the board of directors (“Mesa Diretora”) were all elected in a single, secret vote: the first vice president is deputy Rose de Freitas (PMDB-ES), elected with 450 votes; the position of 2nd vice president belonged to the PP, but as there was an internal party dispute, Eduardo da Fonte (PE) got the position with 288 votes to 211 votes for Rebeca Garcia (AM).
The position of 1st Secretary, which belongs to the PSDB, was won by Eduardo Gomes (TO) with 474 votes; Jorge Tadeu (PMDB-SP) was elected 2nd Secretary with 455 votes; the 3rd Secretary was Inocêncio Oliveira (PR-PE_ with 421 votes; the 4th Secretary was Julio Delgado (PSB-MG) with 451 votes.
