Porto Alegre - At the official inauguration, yesterday (23), of the seminar "Sustainable Aquiculture Development in the Reservoirs of the Southern Region," in the southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre, the Minister of the Special Secretariat of Aquiculture and Fishing, José Fritsch, launched the Aquatic Reform Program.

The Minister emphasized that the objective of the program is to expand annual fish production in Brazil from one million to 18 million tons. He explained that, in the initial phase, areas in the country's six largest reservoirs will be used to breed fish.

Minister Fritsch will also sign a covenant with the University of Rio Grande, in the southern part of the state, for studies to delimit breeding areas in Ducks' Lake ("Lagoa dos Patos").
