Washington, June 23, 2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - Brazil will work together with the United States to perfect its nuclear power generation. This was one more result of the visit made by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and various Brazilian Ministers to the American capital. On Friday (20), the Minister of Science and Technology, Roberto Amaral, signed an agreement with the United States Department of Energy for a joint effort to perfect fourth generation nuclear power production.
By this system, nuclear energy is produced with greater security, without toxic residues and with a smaller consumption of nuclear material. Brazil intends to work with the United States and other countries to produce nuclear reactors, but there is still no date scheduled for this to be put in practice.
In the energy area, Minister Dilma Rousseff also signed a protocol of understanding with the United States to collaborate in the area of research, planning, and renewable energy sources. In the Minister's view, cooperation is fundamental in the energy sector, because, together, Brazil and the United States have enough energy to assure the development of both countries. (DAS)
