Brasília, 10 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - Otto Reich, American deputy secretary of State, met this week with the general subsecretary for Bilateral Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Relations, Gilberto Sabóia. Among other things they discussed the situation in Columbia. "Brazil supports the legitimate government of Columbia and believes in a peaceful solution in that country," said Saboia, adding that both Brazil and the US do not support a direct military intervention there.
With regard to Cuba, Saboia said they discussed the need to integrate that country within the interamerican system through a "non-traumatic" political transition, but admitted that Brazil and the US do not agree on the means to achieve that goal.
As for Venezuela, both countries agree that democratic principles must be respected.
Terrorism was also discussed. Saboia reports that a high level of cooperation exists between Brazil and the US, and that there is no evidence of terrorist activities in the so-called "triple border region," where Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay share borders. (AB)
