Minister underscores importance of Agenda 21

Brasília, 14 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - Minister of Environment, José Carlos Carvalho, while presiding over a meeting on the Agenda 21, declared yestedray that the document has sought to reflect the public's position on sustainable development and environmental protection. Carvalho said that Agenda 21 could serve as the basis for strategic government planning in Brazil, especially for the next multi-year plan (PPA), which will run from 2003 to 2006. He cited a number of examples of ideas in the Agenda 21 which have become government policy: environmental crimes, the family farm program (Pronaf), the Sustainable Rural Development Council, sectoral funds for science and technology, the National Forests Plan and the San Francisco River Renewal project.
