UN begins discussion of compliance with Eco-92 proposals

Brasília, 27 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - Since last Monday, until April 5, the 3rd Session of the UN Preparatory Committee for the World Summit on Sustainable Development is taking place in New York. The main objective of the meeting is to discuss strategies for implementing the targets set at the Eco 92 conference, especially the Agenda 21. Results of this meeting will be discussed at the Johannesberg Summit beginning August 26.

According to a note from the Ministry of Foreign Relations, the challenge is to move from describing to doing. As for financing, the note says it is fundamental to reaffirm the commitment by developed nations, pursuant to the Agenda 21, to allocate 0.7% of GDP for official development assistance. This would mean reverting the present downward trend in aid, which is now running at less than one-third what the Eco 92 meeting said it should be. (AB)
