Brazil wants FTAA negotiations to be congruent with other negotiations

Brasília, 30 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - The subsecretary general for Integration, Economic and Foreign Trade, Clodoaldo Hugueney, says that Brazil wants to negotiate the creation of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) in a manner that is similar to the World Trade Organization (WTO) to facilitate comparisons. By using the same method, it will be easier to prepare other negotiations (for example, with the European Union), or extend them.

The subsecretary general says that the FTAA Commercial Negotiating Committee (CNC) which met last week in Venezuela, did not reach an agreement on investments because the focus shifted from investments in block countries to access through foreign investment. The change could be an obstacle because it implies a definition of rules for foreign investors who wish to enter the countries. (AB)
