Oxford University honors Cardoso

Oxford (England), November 14, 2002 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - President Fernando Henrique Cardoso received an honorary doctorate degree today from Oxford University, the oldest English-speaking university in the world. The title of Doctor in Civil Law for politicians who still hold power is conferred every two years. Cardoso is the first Brazilian head of state, and the only one in Latin America, to receive the title, which is conferred only on foreign statesmen. The most recent recipients were: Romano Prodi (Italy), Bill Clinton (USA), and Nelson Mandela (South Africa). (DAS)
