Rio police once again move into drug dealer territory in city slums

04/07/2004 - 15h16

Rio, 7/5/2004 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - Police in Rio de Janeiro have moved into a slum area known as the Morro do Adeus (Goodbye Hill) in the northern part of the city following reports that drug dealers from another slum, Morro do Alemão (German Hill), had taken over the area forcing people to leave their homes.

Two bodies, of a woman and a man who seem to have been tortured, were found by the police. Five members of a drug traffic gang were reported to have been arrested.

Although the police are in control of the situation, the region remains tense and far from calm.
