IPC-S shows a spike in food and education prices

Rio - Inflation between December 27, 2003 and January 26, 2004, as measured by the Weekly
Consumer Price Index survey (IPC-S), which is conducted by the Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), was 1%, that is 0.20 percentage points above the index for the month ending on January 19. FGV reports that there was strong seasonal pressure on prices from the Food and Education groups, accounting for 78% of the IPC-S increase.

The survey found that in the 12 cities surveyed, prices rose most in Recife (inflation of 1.46%), while the lowest was in São Paulo (0.68%). (AB)
