Secretary of Public Security opposes use of Armed Forces to combat urban violence

Rio, 12/15/2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - The head of the National Secretariat of Public Security, Luiz Fernando Corrêa, says he is opposed to the use of the Armed Forces to combat urban violence. Speaking at a Rio de Janeiro Commercial Association seminar on "Armed Forces and Public Security," Corrêa declared that nowadays the function of the Armed Forces is in logistics and intelligence where they are doing a good job. "Putting the Army on city streets is not a solution," he said. (AB)
