Tripoli - The arrival of president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Libya was tumultuous. Hundreds of people turned out on the streets to greet him.
Lula reviewed an honor guard in front of the former home of the president of Libya, Muamar Khadafi, which was bombed by US aircraft in 1986. The home, where a baby daughter of Khadafi was killed in the bombing, has never been rebuilt but is a kind of museum and symbol of local resistance. Inside the home the walls were hung with pictures of Lula and protest posters against former US president Ronald Reagan, who ordered the bombing.
Later the two presidents met at the Bab Azyzia palace for private conversations. (AB)
