Government wants tracking of cattle herd by end of 2004

Brasília, November 12, 2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - To avoid the risk of having meat and vegetable exports prohibited, the Brazilian government is rushing to implant a tracking system in the country by the end of 2004. 2005 is the deadline set by the European Union. The acting Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply, Amauri Dimarzo, said on Monday (10) that it is expected that, by the end of next year, 80% of the national cattle herd (140 million head), the part free of hoof and mouth disease, will be tracked.
