Brasília, December 2, 2002 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - The Ministry of Justice will use data from the System for the Vigilance of the Amazon (Sivam) to map criminality in the region and plan specific actions for public security in the Brazilian Amazon. Information on land invasions, deforestation, location of clandestine runways, and aircraft routes will provide guidance for actions ranging from police operations to allocation of funds for the states.

Representatives of the Ministry's National Department of Law Enforcement (Senasp), civil and military police, and Departments of Security in states that form the Brazilian Amazon will gather on December 3 and 4, in Belém and Manaus, respectively, to coordinate the formalization of an agreement with the Management and Operations Center of the System for the Protection of the Amazon (Censipam). The System for the Protection of the Amazon (Sipam) will monitor 60% of the nation's territory and is considered the world's largest environmental protection project. (DAS)
