Brasília - The world's highest productivity in saltwater shrimp-breeding is found in Northeastern Brazil. Production totals as much as six tons annually per hectare. These results reflect favorable climatic conditions, appropriate, locally developed technology, and mastery of the species' reproductive cycle. Another factor contributing to the success of shrimp-breeding in the Northeastern states is the availability of extensive coastal areas - 300 thousand hectares. The trend in world market demand to give preference to smaller shrimp also plays an important part.

This information may be found in the study, "Prospects for Crustacean-Breeding in Northeastern Brazil," published this week by the Bank of the Northeast's (BNB) Technical Office for Economic Research (ETENE).
