Curitiba, 22 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - The second industrial penitentiary of Brazil was inaugurated Thursday in the city of Cascavel, in the state of Parana. The first was built in Guarapuava, also in Parana. The construction, initiated over 3 years ago, cost R$ 7.5 million (approx. US$ 3.1 million), with most of money coming from the federal government.
A triage of inmates of the region has been underway for a month to choose those with the best behavior to work on the production of export items. The Industrial Penitentiary of Cascavel has the capacity to hold 240 inmates and each will receive a monthly minimum wage for their labor, as well as 1 day deducted from their sentence for every 3 days worked.
