Brasília - A book store in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, Livraria Cortez de Santo André, has begun 2004 with a new service for low-income customers in the neighborhood of Sacadura Cabral, where it is located. The store is renting books for the symbolic price of R$1 (around US$0.30). "We are trying to offer something to customers who come in and look around but do not have the money to buy a book," says the manager, Francisco Ednilson Xavier Gomes. There will be more than one hundred books for rent, something in all genres, something for all ages. And, after each 10 book rentals, the customer will get a R$10 discount on a purchase. (AB)
