Rio, January 27, 2004 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - The cost of shopping baskets purchased by families that live in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area rose 0.68% in the third week of January, according to a study done by the Commercial Federation of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Fecomércio/RJ). This result indicates that prices maintained the rising trend that has been verified since the beginning of the month. The average value of the basket was R$ 296.68, as against R$ 294.68 in the second week.
The families that increased their spending the most were those that earn between five and six minimum wages. The cost of their baskets rose 0.84%. The study reflects price variations for 39 of the products that weigh most heavily in family budgets.
The products whose prices increased the most last week were tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, toilet paper, oranges, dried beef, apples, beer, powdered laundry detergent, and rice. The most pronounced declines were for cheese, refined sugar, beans, powdered milk, and dishwashing liquid. (DAS)
