Brasília, January 5, 2004 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - The Federal Public Safety System (SUSP), instated at the beginning of Lula's administration, is already a success. This assessment was made by the Minister of Justice, Márcio Thomaz Bastos. In an interview with Radiobrás, the Minister singled out the integrated action cabinets installed in the states, as well as announcing the hiring of new agents to strengthen the efforts of the Federal Police (PF).

The Minister explained that the Public Safety System involves the civilian and military police, the Federal Police, the Federal Highway Police, the Public Interest Defenders' Office, and the Judiciary. "All of this integrated in an administrative body called the State Cabinet of Integrated Public Safety Management. We obtained the adherence of the 27 governors," he recalled.

The 27 states are now doing their job on the basis of cooperation and partnership, so funds from the Secretariat of Public Safety are distributed in a coordinated manner. Besides which, the Minister explained, "we also share intelligence and information."

The Minister also explained that the use of Terra Crime, a software program developed in the National Secretariat of Public Safety to plot crime geographically, overlaying photographs and information, will make it possible to detect areas in which more murders, thefts, and robberies occur and to act to prevent them.

"The SUSP has already been implanted throughout the country, and we are now engaged in the second stage, which is to get the integrated management cabinets into full swing. In these cabinets everything is decided through consensus. There are goals to be reached, and the main objective is the efficacy of the police, on the one hand, and respect for human rights, on the other," he added.

Another experiment still in the testing phase is the Regional Integrated Management Cabinet. The first one was implanted in the Southeast region - a single cabinet uniting the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, and Minas Gerais. (DAS)
