Brasília, 12/24/2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - With the knowledge that land reform is more than just giving people a piece of land, the Brazilian government's Land Reform Education Program (Programa Nacional de Educação na Reforma Agrária) (Pronera) put 44,146 people in its settlement program through literacy classes in 2003.

The land reform literacy program was developed by the MInistry of Agrarian Development and the Land Reform Institute (Instituto Nacional de Colonização e Reforma Agrária) (Incra), and is scheduled to benefit another 44,500 people in 2004. Besides teaching reading and writing, the program gives professional training, elementary and high school classes, and some university level courses. (AB)
