Brasília, November 17, 2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - Last Tuesday (11), the National Indian Foundation (Funai) began the distribution of food baskets to 408 Indian families in the state of Alagoas. They received 2,600 basic food baskets, containing a total of 67,600 kilograms of food. The emergency was the result of a drought that destroyed their subsistence crop and caused malnutrition among children and old folk. Alagoas is home to the Xukuru-Kariri, Wassu, Tingüi-Boto, Pankararu, Kariri-Xoco, and Carapoto Indian tribes. (DAS)
