São Paulo, 9/29/2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - The Paquistani, Asma Jahangir, who is a UN Special Rapporteur on Summary Executions, was in Guarulhos, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, for a meeting with relatives of victims of an extermination group which it is believed has members who are in the police force.

Jahangir has been in Brazil since September 16, and has visited the states of Pernambuco, Bahia, Pará and the Federal District, where she has been looking into charges of police violence, extermination groups and the improper treatment of inmates in juvenile prisons (Febem).

In São Paulo she met with representatives of human rights groups who reported that they had information on 394 executions in Brazil between 1997 and 2003.

Jahangir will also meet with São Paulo state authorities and is expected to once again attempt to visit a Febem installation. She was denied access to a Febem unit a week ago.

When she completes her visit Jahangir will submit a report to the United Nations. (AB)
