Brasilia – The landowner/farmer, Vitalmiro Bastos de Moura, who has been sentenced to 30 years in jail for his part in the 2005 murder of the missionary, Dorothy Stang (a 73-year-old Catholic nun), had another petition for release (a writ of habeas corpus) denied by the Brazilian Supreme Court. Known as Bida, the landowner is temporarily in prison in Belem, Pará, awaiting a final determination of the merits in his case.
In his decision (the equivalent of a preliminary injunction prior to examination of the merits of the case), Supreme Court justice, Gilmar Mendes, said there was no sign of illegality in the imprisonment.
