First quarter GDP growth was 1.4%

Rio - Brazil's GDP grew 1.4% in the first quarter of 2006, compared to the last quarter of 2005, reports the government statistical bureau (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística) (IBGE)

Compared to the first quarter of 2005, GDP growth was up a strong 3.4%.

According to the IBGE, first quarter growth by sector was: industry up1.7%; agriculture up 1.1%; and services up 0.8%.
