Brasília, 23 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - President Fernando Henrique Cardoso says he wants to ensure that the State and society are more activiely involved in fighting crime and promoting citizenship in the slum complex known as "Alemão" in Rio de Janeiro, where a journalist, Tim Lopes, was recently murdered. Speaking to a commission of journalists which is monitoring the investigation of the murder, Cardoso said he would support measures to renovate the slum and was appointing Wanda Engeil, the secretary of Social Assistance, to coordinate social programs in the area.
Cardoso said it was important to make it clear that Tim Lopes did not die in vain and that the reinstatement of government control in the Alemão slum [presently controlled by drug dealers] was "to be a landmark event and a symbol of the fight against violence." (AB)
