Rio, 2 (Agência Brasil - ABr) – The National Metrology Institute will be 30 years old in 2003 and has plans to increase its accredited organizations in order to meet rising demand for more sophisticated standards. At the moment, Inmetro has 470 accrediting agencies. According to Armando Mariante, Inmetro president, one new area is forest management. Industrialized countries are now requiring information not only on quality, but also on the origin of lumber - they want lumber from renewable sources, not predatory foresting. Mariante says Inmetro will be prepared to assist exporters to meet international standards. (AB)
