Brasilia – Voting is mandatory in Brazil and there is a huge parallel court system (“Justiça Eleitoral”) to handle problems with voting and registration. There is also a rigid timetable for voters and candidates. One of the first deadlines for this year’s mid-term elections in October fell this week: people who have moved had until Wednesday, May 9, to update their voter registration and change their voting location to one near their new address.

For that reason, last weekend local election offices (“zonas de tribunais eleitorais regionais”) stayed open in the states of Acre, Amazonas, Amapá, Bahia, Ceará, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Pará, Paraíba, Paraná, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Santa Catarina, São Paulo, Sergipe and Tocantins. Even so, yesterday there were long lines.
