Rio de Janeiro – Unemployment for November, as measured by the government statistical bureau (“IBGE”), was 5.2%, the lowest for the month since 2002. Compared to November 2010 (when unemployment came in at 5.7%), it was down 0.5 percentage points.

The IBGE employment survey in the country’s six principal metropolitan regions (Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and São Paulo) found a total of 22.8 million people with jobs; 11.2 million of them were on-the-books (“com carteira assinada”) workers in the private sector. The IBGE reported 1.3 million people without jobs.

Average wage earner income in November was R$1,623.40, the highest amount for the month since 2002.
