Rio de Janeiro – The state-run electricity sector holding company, Eletrobrás, along with Brazilian private [construction] companies have been invited to participate in the construction of up to 15 hydroelectric power plants in the Peruvian Andes. An agreement on sharing the electricity generated was reached during a summit on June 15, in Manaus, that brought presidents Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Alan Garcia together.
Spokespersons for the Brazilian electricity sector report that Brazil will initially build between four and six of the plants, with total generating capacity of around 7,000 MW.
Although many technical details remain to be ironed out, the president of Electobras, José Antônio Muniz Lopez, says that construction of the first dam will start at the beginning of 2011, with production scheduled for 2016.
