Brasília – Exactly a year after soldiers hustled the elected president, Manuel Zelaya, out of the country, putting in place an unelected administration headed by the president of the legislature and supported by the military and Supreme Court, Honduras remains suspended from the Organization of American States. The country is now ruled by the government of Porfirio Lobo, elected at the end of 2009 in regularly scheduled elections, but many Latin American nations do not recognize Lobo or his administration, considering it the fruit of an illegal coup. Lobo has been on a road show around the continent trying to convince his neighbors that he is legitimate.
The OAS, in particular, has doubts about human rights, as well as the independence of the legislative and judicial branches of government.  An OAS delegation is scheduled to arrive in Honduras this week to check on the situation. Neighbors, especially members of the Union of South American Nations (“Unasur” - Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela), are concerned about the status and rights of Zelaya and his followers.
The visit by the OAS delegation and the fact that this week Lobo will participate in Latin American System Integration meetings are seen as indications that Honduras will soon be accepted back into the international community.
