Brasília – On June 28, 2009, in an action supported by the Armed Forces, the Congress and the Supreme Court, the president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, was removed from office and sent out of the country. At the moment he has political asylum in the Dominican Republic but remains in constant contact with followers in Honduras and foreign authorities. It is believed that Zelaya wishes to return to his country and get back into politics.
Since the removal of Zelaya, Honduras has had regularly scheduled elections, with Porfirio Lobo winning. However, Lobo and his government are still not internationally recognized as legitimate. One of the main sticking points in Lobo’s attempts to be accepted as the rightful president of Honduras is the status of Zelaya.
Zelaya’s followers consider him a democrat. But most of those presently in power in Honduras see him as an authoritarian figure who attempted to illegally amend the constitution so he could remain in power.
