Brasília – In a post on her Twitter account, Brazil's president Dilma Rousseff has announced that she has asked the Federal Data Service (“Serpro”) to implement new security enhancements to the government's email system. “I have commissioned a secure email system from Serpro to be deployed across all federal government offices and agencies. This is a first step in enhancing the privacy and securing inviolability of official communications. Our messaging capabilities need more security in order to prevent further spying,” the president tweeted over three posts.

This priority government action against US espionage follows allegations made by former US government IT contractor Edward Snowden over the past few months. Ordinary citizens from Brazil and several other countries, and even President Rousseff herself along with her aides and Brazil's Petrobras state oil company are reported to have been spied on. Another target was Brazil's Ministry of Mines and Energy, headed by Edison Lobão.

President Dilma also used her Twitter account last week to ask Lobão for “thorough” assessment and security reinforcements for the government's data systems.
