Brazilian among the 78 dead in Santiago de Compostela train crash

Brasília – Brazil’s ministry of Foreign Relations confirmed on Friday (July 26) that a Brazilian, who is also a naturalized Spaniard, was among the 78 dead in the derailing train accident on July 24 near Santiago de Compostela, in Spain. Brazil’s consulate in Madrid contacted the victim’s relatives, who said they did not need any support and requested further details not to be made public.

The accident involved a train on the Madrid-Ferrol route. Suspicions arose that engine driver Francisco José Garzón Amo, 52, went over the speed limit. He was taken into custody while still being treated at Santiago Hospital and refused to speak to the police.

After initial investigations, suspicions arose that the driver was traveling at 190 km/h where the speed limit was 80 km/h.
