Brasília – With an eye on a series of international events that will take place in the country between now and 2016 – the Confederation Cup, the World Soccer Cup and the Olympic Games – the National Monetary Council has begun the process of making it possible to install special Brazilian ATM-type equipment in tourist areas and large urban centers where they will provide a new service: foreign currency exchange operations. The idea is to handle small transactions, probably up to $3,000. That will make life easier for tourists – visitors to Brazil as well as Brazilians who plan to travel abroad - and businessmen. At the moment, there are a very limited number of places where such currency exchange transactions can take place in Brazil.

According to Geraldo Magela Siqueira, the executive secretary at the Central Bank where the Monetary Council is housed, the goal is the creation of network of currency exchange sites compatible with Brazil’s new status as a premium tourist destination. In accordance with Brazilian legislation, which requires the identification of people dealing with foreign currencies, the transactions will have to be made using some kind of international credit card.
