Brasília – During a session of joint declarations after meetings with the president of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, the president of the United States, Barack Obama, declared that the US is ready to take action if Muammar Gadhafi does not implement a cease-fire and halt attacks on the rebels who oppose his government.

“Yesterday the international community called for a cease-fire in Libya that was to go into effect today. We [the United Nations Security Council] approved the formation of a coalition of various countries to implement that resolution and protect the population. If there is not an immediate cease-fire we will take action,” said Obama, in the Palacio do Planalto, in Brasilia, standing beside the president of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff.
Obama went on to say that the creation of a no-fly zone was basically a humanitarian measure.

“This is a question of human rights, allowing people to defend themselves in Libya,” said the American president.

With regard to the fact that Brazil abstained in the Security Council vote on military action in Libya, Obama just said the country was exercising its right as a rotating member of the council.
